Social Justice Educator Endures Backlash $3000 for the three and nine year-old children of an educator and social innovator who was fired, lost multiple contracts and faced public and professional scorn for calling out anti-Blackness in educational frameworks. FL

Prisoners’ Rights Activist Surveilled $2305 for tuition and martial arts for the 10 and 13 year-old sons of a leading prisoners’ rights and anti-death penalty activist. As a result of his work, he has been arrested numerous times, placed on a domestic terrorist watch list and had his family placed under surveillance. AR

Student Activist Faces Deportation A $1000 Targeted Activist Youth (TAY) Development Grant [1] for a 22 year-old college student who, despite her status as a permanent U.S. resident, is facing deportation over her involvement in pro-Palestine protests and has sued the White House as a result. Trans Student Imprisoned for Civil Disobedience A $1000 TAY Development Grant for a 21-year old transgender college student who was stripped of her rosary and imprisoned in a men’s ward after using the women’s restroom in a state capitol building in defiance of unjust policies; she had sent letters to state lawmakers notifying them of her protest and asking them to reconsider transphobic laws. CIVIL LIBERTIES

Fathers Falsely Accused $7500 for homeschooling expenses for five children, ages 11 to 18, from two related families. Their fathers spoke out against the Iraq war and were falsely accused of terrorist activity and hunted by the FBI as a result. GA

Mother Surveilled $6000 for childcare and recreational activities for three children, ages six to 14, whose mom faced harassment and surveillance for advocating for political prisoners unjustly targeted in the U.S. “war on terror.” MA

Activists Forced Out of Work $5700 for music equipment, tutoring, therapy and two Carry it Forward (CIF) [2] awards for five children, ages seven to 21, from three families whose parents were fired for advocating for racial justice and free press rights. CA, MI, MN

Journalist Stabbed $1500 for tutoring for the 11-year-old daughter whose father, a journalist, was attacked while covering a neo-Nazi rally. He was arrested and had his camera confiscated while his attacker walked free. CA

Anti-Fascist Protester Imprisoned $1500 for tuition and art class for the three year-old son whose father is in prison for throwing a folding chair in self defense while protesting a rally of armed and violent white supremacists in his community. Members of the rally were not charged. CA

Mom Targeted $1000 for dance and kickboxing classes for the nine year-old girl whose mom went public about being stopped by a Customs and Border Patrol agent because she was speaking Spanish. She took legal action and had to move to escape the harassment she endured for speaking out. Location Withheld

Bruce Miller Legacy Fund Grant: Student Activist Harassed $1000 for school supplies for an 18-year-old Black student in a majority-white school who filed a civil rights lawsuit after a teacher shoved and berated her for declining to say the pledge of allegiance. SC

ENVIRONMENTAL & ANIMAL RIGHTS

Parents Fight to Protect Environment $26,600 for a broad range of programs and a CIF award for 20 children, ages one to 23, from seven families. Some parents were beaten and arrested while marching against environmental racism, while others were attacked or imprisoned for their organizing work. AR, CA, FL, GA, NY, VA

Environmental Racism Protesters Targeted $8100 for educational and sports programs and a CIF award for six children, ages six to 22, from four families who have spent years organizing against environmental racism in their communities and have faced targeting by employers and police. AL

Young Environmental Activist Expelled $1500 for homeschooling support for a 17 year-old who was expelled from school and harassed after he began a public protest every Friday afternoon to raise awareness of global heating. WI

Environmental Activist Targeted by FBI $1000 for tuition for the 16 year-old daughter of a longtime environmentalist and organizer. Her activist father has been called a domestic terrorist, threatened with imprisonment and subjected to multiple FBI raids for his efforts to save the planet. NY

GENDER, SEXUALITY & REPRODUCTIVE RIGHTS

Parents and Children Fight for Trans Rights $12,500 for school tuition, music lessons and therapy for nine children, ages 10 to 16, from four families fighting for transgender rights. In response to the public-facing activism of the parents and their children, they received hate messages from around the world and some were swarmed by violent counter-protesters. One family had to relocate to an asylum state for trans youth. Location Withheld

Reproductive Justice Organizers Threatened $3600 for karate, tuition and a CIF award for three children, ages eight to 18, from two families that faced severe harassment and attacks as a result of their fights for reproductive justice. Location Withheld

Teen Activist Creating Safer World $1500 for photography and school supplies for an 18-year-old drag performer and gender liberation activist who builds safe spaces for gender-nonconforming youth despite years of harassment. NY

Mother Threatened with Loss of Son $1500 for equine therapy for the 17-year-old daughter whose mother, an LGBTQIA+ rights activist, was threatened by the state with the removal of one of her children because of her organizing. OR

HUMAN RIGHTS

Parents Forced to Flee $7200 for educational and sports activities and two CIF awards for six children, ages eight to 24, from three families whose parents fled their home countries for the U.S. after their human rights activism put them in immediate danger. IL, NY

Activist Mother Loses Work $2100 for dance classes and a CIF award for the 13 and 19 year-old sisters whose mom advocated against racism and rape culture in schools. In retaliation, she lost important contracts with the local schools and government and was forced to relocate. OK

IMMIGRANTS' RIGHTS

Immigrants’ Rights Advocates Targeted $10,950 for school supplies and winter sports for eight children, ages six to 20, from three families. Their parents were targeted and threatened by ICE as a result of their work exposing injustices in the immigration system. Location Withheld

Dad Targeted While in Sanctuary $1400 for a laptop for a 16 year-old girl whose father is an immigrants’ rights leader. Since being denied a stay of deportation and entering sanctuary, DHS and ICE officials have escalated threats and pressure against him. Location Withheld

LABOR & ECONOMIC JUSTICE

Mom Fights Workplace Discrimination $6000 for sports programs for four children ages eight to 16 whose mother was harassed and fired for forming a group within her workplace for employees to share stories of workplace discrimination and stand up for one another. TX

Mothers Fight for Equity in Schools $5600 for tuition, music programs, speech therapy and a CIF award for five children, ages 12 to 18, from three families. Their mothers fought for inclusion and equity in their children's school systems, and as a result, faced targeting, loss of employment and harassment from school and district officials. AL, CA, GA

Herman Warsh Fund Grant: Union Organizer Fired $3500 for tuition and occupational therapy for the two and 12-year-old daughters whose mother was fired for organizing a union at her Starbucks. TN 

Mother Fired for Advocating for Anti-Racist Workplace $3000 for track expenses for two children, ages 13 and 18, whose mom was fired after she advocated for an anti-racist framework at her job. She was subsequently harassed, and her home was threatened, forcing the family to move. TX

PEACE

Children and Parents Working Together for Peace $9200 for a wide range of programs and a CIF award for seven children, ages eight to 20, from three families in pacifist communities. Their parents have engaged in peaceful anti-war protests and many have been imprisoned for civil disobedience. NC, VA, WA

Support for Children of Torture Survivors $3500 for a group grant for occupational therapy and enrichment activities for kids whose activist parents survived torture in their home countries. The program serves 13 children, ages 11 to 22, from six families. IL

Activist Family Members Threatened and Charged $1600 for a TAY Development Grant and a CIF award for two siblings who have fought alongside their activist parents against genocide and human rights violations at home and around the world. They have either been arrested or had police come unannounced to their home and schools to threaten and harass them. PA

Peace Activist’s Vehicle Vandalized $1000 for soccer and tutoring for the 17-year-old grandson whose grandmother (with whom he lives part time) travels the U.S. advocating for social justice. In response to her activism, her vehicle has been vandalized on numerous occasions and drivers have tried to run her off the road. GA

PRISONERS’ RIGHTS/U.S. POLITICAL PRISONERS

Former Political Prisoners Continue the Fight $5500 for orchestra and sports for three children, ages 17 to 18, from two families. Their fathers were incarcerated for anti-apartheid and anti-racist efforts, and both continue to face targeting for their work to free political prisoners and end human trafficking. GA, MA

Mothers Threatened for Helping Prisoners $5100 for school expenses and a CIF award for four children, ages 12 to 19, from two families. Their mothers have been denied jobs or threatened with prosecution for advocating for individuals wronged in the criminal justice system. AL, NY

Sons of Political Prisoners Targeted $4500 for school tuition, music and martial arts for three children, ages 14 to 15, from two families. Both fathers, themselves the sons of political prisoners, have experienced harassment and job loss because of their activism. GA, VA

RACIAL JUSTICE

Fathers Fired and Harassed for Organizing $10,800 for tuition, tutoring, sports and dance programs for eight children, ages two to 18, from three families. The fathers all lost their jobs or faced police harassment for their public-facing antiracism organizing work. GA

Parents Threatened by Police $9100 for photography and art supplies, educational programs and a CIF award for five children, ages two to 19, from two related families. Their parents have been threatened and one has been jailed because of their work for racial and gender justice. OR

Fighting Racism in Education Costs Families $5100 for educational support and a CIF award for four kids, ages nine to 21, from two families involved in the fight for racial justice in education. Both have worked to improve equity in schools and universities and have been harassed and/or have lost their jobs as a result of their organizing. GA

Mothers Persist Despite Violent Intimidation $5400 for homeschooling supplies, gymnastics, therapy and a CIF award for four children, ages seven to 23, from four families. Their mothers are leaders in the fight for police reform, immigration reform and racial justice. They have received death threats, attention from white supremacists and pressure to relocate their families. OH, MD, TX, WA

Young Civil Rights Activist Targeted A $1000 TAY Development grant for the 21-year-old targeted activist who was bullied due to her leadership in the BLM movement. Location Withheld

CIF AWARDS

$8400 in CIF awards for 14 young adult beneficiaries from 9 families. Their parents are active organizers for reproductive justice, indigenous liberation, global human rights and more. AL, HI, IL, NY, OK, PA, TX

GROCERY GIFT CARDS

$9000 to provide $200 grocery gift cards for current RFC beneficiary families facing emergency circumstances.
