Today's #StrangeFruitMOTD is a haunting reimagining of Abel Meeropol's anti-lynching song, "Strange Fruit." Tony award winner Tonya Pinkins delivers a powerful performance of "Strange Fruit, Revisited," a George Floyd protest song which tells a modern story of anti-Black violence.

The song's lyrics seem to be in conversation with the lyrics of the original "Strange Fruit," riffing off of Meeropol's language and imagery. It closes with an inversion of the central iconography of the original song, "No, it’s not the fruit that’s strange and rotten," while in the music video, the camera pointedly lingers on the faces of the Minneapolis police officers responsible for George Floyd's death.

"In the 1950's my father went to jail for being a member of the Communist Party. As a teenaged girl it was important to know that someone outside our own family cared what happened to us, knew that we needed emotional as well as some financial support. I know from my experience that the work you are doing is very important." -RFC Supporter
